President Salva Kiir Mayardit has led South Sudan in commemorating Martyrs’ Day, honouring the men and women whose sacrifices paved the way for the country’s independence.
Citizens, government officials, security personnel, diplomats and veterans gathered on Thursday for a solemn ceremony dedicated to the country’s fallen heroes and heroines.
The commemoration paid particular tribute to South Sudan’s founding leader, Dr John Garang de Mabior, as well as thousands of others who lost their lives during the struggle for freedom, justice and self-determination.
The annual observance is a significant moment in South Sudan’s national calendar, recalling the long struggle that culminated in independence in 2011 after decades of conflict.
President Kiir and those attending the ceremony remembered the sacrifices of the martyrs while reflecting on the ideals of peace, unity and national service for which they gave their lives.
The event brought together veterans alongside younger generations of South Sudanese, highlighting the continuing national importance of the independence struggle and the legacy left by those who fought for the country.
The Martyrs’ Day observance comes as South Sudan continues to face political and security challenges, with calls from civil society and other stakeholders for the country’s leaders to uphold the principles of peace, reconciliation and national unity.
