The Northern Bahr el Ghazal State Legislative Assembly has passed a SSP 40.5 billion budget for the 2025/2026 fiscal year following its third reading on Tuesday.
The budget was tabled by the State Minister of Finance, Dut Akot, and subsequently adopted by the Assembly after deliberations by lawmakers.
With its passage, the Appropriation Bill will now be forwarded to the Speaker for transmission to the Governor for assent and enactment into law.
Speaking after the approval, Chairperson of the Assembly’s Information Committee, Garang Deng Dut, said the legislature had completed its constitutional mandate in the budget-making process.
“The allocation was done, the Assembly passed it and handed it over to the Madam Speaker. The document will now be submitted to the Governor for signature into law,” he said.
According to the Assembly, the social service sectors received the largest share of the budget.
The ministries of Education, Health, Rural Development and Animal Resources were allocated a combined SSP 16.7 billion, accounting for 41.3 per cent of the total budget, reflecting the state’s focus on essential service delivery.
Other ministries were allocated SSP 15.6 billion, representing 38.6 per cent of the total budget, while the remaining funds were earmarked for development projects across the state.
The 2025/2026 budget is expected to be financed through locally generated revenue and transfers from the national government.
State officials say the fiscal plan aims to support service delivery, strengthen key institutions and promote development despite ongoing economic challenges.
The passage of the budget marks a key milestone in the state’s legislative calendar, paving the way for implementation at the start of the new fiscal year once signed into law by the Governor.
