
The South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State has urged Governor Simon Uber Mawut to ensure transparency and accountability in the ongoing corruption saga involving the suspended State Minister of Roads and Bridges, Carolina Achok Akot.
In a statement seen by Standard Zone News, SSOA chairperson Edward Nyuol Arop acknowledged the governor’s authority to suspend a public official but faulted him for not immediately forming an investigative committee.
“SSOA is urging our peace partner, H.E. the Governor, to uphold the rule of law by forming a committee to investigate the matter and give feedback to the people of NBGS—Aweil regarding the alleged corruption, or take her to court immediately so that the principles of justice are preserved,” Nyuol said.
He stressed that the constitution provides for investigations into suspended officials, with the public entitled to know the results. “The governor did not form the committee to trace the assets in question, alleged to be mismanaged by the suspended minister, so that people of NBGS are updated about their funds for development, since the government is accountable to the people, not to the governor,” he added.
Governor Uber suspended Minister Achok on August 25, 2025, citing allegations of corruption and insubordination. The minister has denied the charges, instead accusing the governor of masterminding corruption and framing her for personal reasons. She also expressed fears of possible arrest after days passed without the formation of an investigation committee.
When contacted by Standard Zone News, the governor’s press secretary, Ayuel Chan Mawien, confirmed that the process of forming the committee was underway. He urged both SSOA and the suspended minister to be patient.
