President Kiir approves establishment of Yei University

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has approved the establishment of Yei University at the former UNMISS base in Yei Town, marking a significant step toward expanding access to higher education in Central Equatoria State and beyond.

The decision follows a briefing by Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony upon his return from a medical trip, during which he updated the President on the overall security and governance situation in the state.

According to the Governor, Central Equatoria remains largely calm despite isolated incidents in areas such as Jebel Iraq (Khor Khaltan).

He noted that authorities are closely monitoring the situation, particularly in Khor Khaltan, where he said more than 150,000 people are currently residing.

In response to emerging security concerns, the state government, in coordination with the Civil Defence Force (CDF), has deployed additional forces to reinforce stability in the area.

Plans are also underway to establish a police station and an administrative office to strengthen local governance and improve public service delivery.

Governor Adil further disclosed that discussions are ongoing with the Ministry of Mining to enforce proper licensing in gold-rich areas, aiming to regulate mining activities and reduce illegal operations.

He also confirmed intensified border operations to track down individuals involved in criminal activities across the region.

On the issue of law and order, the Governor said authorities have launched a crackdown on gang-related crimes, with plans to rehabilitate offenders, including minors, and reintegrate them into society as part of broader social stability efforts.

President Kiir, while welcoming the Governor back from his medical trip, commended the updates and urged continued implementation of security and governance measures across the state.

He emphasized the importance of strong coordination among institutions, improved community awareness, and sustained stability, particularly as the country prepares for the December 2026 elections.

The approval of Yei University is expected to enhance access to higher education, strengthen human capital development, and contribute to long-term socio-economic growth in the region.
