Revenue Authority updates reform committee on Nimule border measures

The South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) has updated the government’s Ministerial High-Level Committee on Economic Reform on measures being implemented at the Nimule border crossing to strengthen revenue collection and support the country’s ongoing economic reform programme.

The briefing was delivered on Monday by the Commissioner General of the SSRA, Ambassador Moun Deng Ajuet, during the committee’s regular meeting chaired by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Pieng Deng Kuol.

The Commissioner General presented findings from his recent official visit to the Nimule border, where he met customs officials and other stakeholders to assess revenue collection and the implementation of government reforms aimed at improving tax administration.

According to the committee’s Rapporteur, James Mawich, the briefing focused on efforts to enhance compliance with customs procedures and strengthen revenue administration at one of the country’s busiest border entry points.

During the visit, Amb. Moun outlined a series of measures designed to curb smuggling, prevent tax evasion and address the under-declaration of imported goods.

He also stressed the importance of ensuring the proper use of official tariff books to promote transparency and consistency in customs operations.

The Revenue Authority said the initiatives are intended to improve domestic revenue mobilization, reduce leakages and reinforce the government’s wider economic reform agenda.

Committee members welcomed the update, noting that the Commissioner’s findings and recommendations would contribute to strengthening the implementation of the government’s revenue mobilization strategy and improve oversight of reforms at key border posts.

The meeting also reviewed progress in implementing President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s directive cancelling non-statutory tax exemptions, a measure the government says is aimed at increasing public revenue and promoting fairness in the tax system.

In a separate agenda item, the committee received a report from the Minister of Trade and Industry, Hon. Labanya Margret, on the implementation of previous Cabinet resolutions.

The report will help inform the development of an implementation matrix to monitor and evaluate the government’s ongoing economic reform programme.

The Ministerial High-Level Committee on Economic Reform continues to oversee the implementation of key fiscal and administrative reforms intended to strengthen public finances, improve revenue collection and support South Sudan’s long-term economic recovery.
