Central Equatoria State is experiencing a surge in suicide rates, with twelve incidents reported in the past week alone.
This alarming figure was revealed by Leon Abe Brown, the State Minister of Local Government and Law Enforcement Agency, following a security meeting chaired by Governor Emmanuel Mujung on Wednesday.
“Over the past one week alone, suicide cases have risen to 12,” stated Minister Abe.
The minister did not provide a detailed explanation for the rise in suicide cases; however, South Sudan is currently grappling with severe economic and food crisis, leaving many families to go to bed hungry.
Adding to the suicide and security concerns, the minister also reported an increase in burglary and theft incidents across Juba County.
In response, the Security Committee has directed all security organs to intensify surveillance and crack down on criminal activities within the city.
“We call on all security agencies to fully execute their mandate of protecting citizens and their property, and to remain on high alert in order to apprehend and investigate those responsible,” he urged.
Minister Abe also addressed land-related disputes within Juba, urging citizens to follow proper legal procedures when acquiring land.
He emphasized the need for public cooperation, especially during the verification and allocation of plots to rightful owners.
His comments came after a reported clash during a recent plot allocation exercise conducted by the State Ministry of Housing, Land, and Public Utilities in Korok West.
“Those involved in the land allocation exercise possessed valid documents. However, during the implementation of the allocation process, certain individuals attempted to sabotage the operation,” Abe explained. “As the Security Committee, we urge respect for the government and its institutions.”
Despite the reported incidents, Minister Abe described the overall security situation in Central Equatoria State as calm, acknowledging only isolated incidents in other parts of the State.
He reaffirmed the State Government’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and stability, and called for continued cooperation between the public and security forces to achieve this goal.
