South Sudan approves SSP7 trillion budget for 2025–2026 Fiscal Year

The Council of Ministers on Friday approved South Sudan’s 2025–2026 fiscal year budget totaling SSP7 trillion, during an ordinary session chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The Cabinet has directed the Minister of Finance and Planning to table the budget before Parliament for further debate and final endorsement.

Government spokesperson Michael Makuei Lueth noted that the proposed budget carries a deficit of SSP1.5 trillion, with the Ministry of Finance pledging to strengthen revenue collection to bridge the gap.

The meeting also reviewed key infrastructure plans, including the proposed construction of a road linking South Sudan to Ethiopia and the port of Djibouti, a move aimed at improving crude oil transport to international markets.

President Kiir instructed all ministers to enhance the performance of their institutions, emphasizing efficiency and accountability, while the Cabinet banned unnecessary tax and duty exemptions, which have previously cost the government billions.

Additionally, the Council prohibited any individual from signing loans on behalf of the government without following proper legal procedures, underscoring the importance of safeguarding the nation’s financial integrity.

The government says the approved budget reflects its commitment to stability, development, and transparent financial management in the coming fiscal year.
