South Sudan’s long-distance runner Atalena Napule has arrived in Tokyo, Japan, ahead of her participation in the prestigious World Athletics Championships Tokyo25.
Napule touched down at Narita International Airport on Friday, where she was warmly welcomed by Ambassador Gabriel Deng, representing the South Sudan Embassy in Japan, together with officials from the Tokyo25 Local Organizing Committee (LOC).
The 28-year-old marathon star is scheduled to compete on Sunday, September 14, in the women’s marathon, one of the most anticipated events of the championships.
Speaking at the reception, Ambassador Deng commended Napule for carrying the South Sudanese flag onto the global stage:
“Atalena carries the hopes and pride of our nation. Her participation reflects the growing strength of South Sudanese athletes internationally,” he said.
The Tokyo25 World Championships bring together the finest athletes from across the globe, and Napule’s presence highlights South Sudan’s emerging profile in world athletics.
For South Sudan, a young sporting nation still carving out its place in international competitions, Napule’s participation symbolizes both national pride and inspiration for the country’s youth, demonstrating the vast potential of South Sudanese endurance athletes on the world stage.
