The SPLM/A-IO has strongly denied allegations linking its forces to the recent attack on Abiemnhom County in the Ruweng Administrative Area, describing the claims as false, misleading, and without factual basis.
In a press release issued on March 1, 2025, the opposition movement said it “unequivocally rejects and condemns, in the strongest possible terms,” statements by authorities in Ruweng Administrative Area and Unity State accusing SPLA-IO forces of involvement in the attack that occurred earlier in the day.
The movement categorically denied any participation in or responsibility for the incident.
The SPLM/A-IO further emphasized that it has no military presence in Abiemnhom County or the surrounding areas, dismissing the accusations as an attempt to misinform the public and shift blame.
The leadership maintained that linking the movement to the violence was both inaccurate and irresponsible, particularly at a time when tensions remain high in the region.
Despite rejecting the allegations, the opposition group expressed sympathy with the victims of the attack.
“Our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their loved ones,” the statement read, extending condolences to bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery to those injured during the incident.
The press release was signed by Puok Both Baluang, Acting Press Secretary in the Office of the First Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan and Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/A-IO.
He reiterated the movement’s commitment to peace and urged authorities to conduct credible investigations rather than issue what he described as unfounded public accusations.
