SPLM slams Nhial Deng Nhial, labels his new party disappointing

South Sudan’s ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has sharply criticized former presidential affairs minister Nhial Deng Nhial following his announcement of a new political party, describing the move as “disappointing” and “politically disingenuous.”

In a statement issued Tuesday, SPLM Acting Secretary for Political Affairs, Kuol Atem, said Nhial’s decision to break away from the party reflects “personal ambition rather than genuine reform intent.”

“The SPLM regrets that a veteran who contributed to the liberation struggle would choose division over unity at a time when the nation needs collective leadership,” Atem said. “His so-called new party offers no alternative vision beyond personal dissatisfaction.”

Nhial, a long-time SPLM stalwart and close ally of the late Dr. John Garang, announced last week the formation of the South Sudan Salvation Movement (SSSM), pledging to “revive national integrity and rebuild lost trust in leadership.”

But the SPLM dismissed the claim, accusing Nhial of attempting to “rebrand old grievances” under a new banner.

“The SPLM remains the people’s movement,” Atem added. “Political opportunism disguised as reform will not deceive citizens who know the history of their struggle.”

The defection marks one of the most significant political shifts ahead of South Sudan’s planned general elections, with observers noting that Nhial’s move could attract reform-minded elites but also deepen fractures within the ruling party.
