Turkey to study South Sudan rail, river, airport projects

South Sudan has taken a major step toward upgrading its transport network after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Turkish business groups to carry out feasibility studies on railway, river transport, and airport development.

The agreement, signed on 13 February 2026 by the Ministry of Transport, marks the start of formal engagement with private sector investors from Turkey interested in South Sudan’s infrastructure sector.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Paul Dhel Gum, welcomed the Turkish delegation and said the country is eager to benefit from Turkey’s technical experience in modern transport systems.

“South Sudan is poised to benefit immensely from Turkish expertise in rail, river, and airport development,” Dhel said.

Minister of Transport Rizik Zachariah Hassan emphasized that the government is ready to support credible investors, describing infrastructure development as essential for safe movement of people and goods across the country.

“Improving transport infrastructure is the backbone of economic growth and national connectivity,” the minister noted.

The MoU allows Turkish firms to conduct detailed technical and economic studies, which could pave the way for large-scale investments in railways, inland waterways, and aviation facilities.

The ministry say successful studies may lead to public–private partnerships aimed at boosting trade, lowering transport costs, and improving regional integration.

If implemented, the projects are expected to enhance mobility, support commerce, and contribute to long-term development in South Sudan, where transport infrastructure remains limited after years of conflict and underinvestment.
