Morobo County in Central Equatoria State is facing a surge in insecurity incidents following two tragic road ambushes this week.
On Tuesday, July 1st, a boda boda rider, commonly known as Munu, was killed near an area known as Kanja. The following day, on July 2nd, gunmen targeted a South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) soldier escorting a truck, leading to another loss of life.
Local police reports shared with local radio, Iyete FM 87.7 have identified the victims as John Bosco, the boda boda rider, and Job Wol, the SSPDF officer.
These attacks have instilled fear and uncertainty among residents and travelers. Many truck drivers are reportedly stranded at the Morobo County Headquarters, anxiously awaiting security clearance to continue their journeys.
Local authorities have condemned the acts of violence and are calling on residents to remain calm amid the rising tensions.
The situation is increasingly concerning. Last month, Morobo County Commissioner Charles Data Bullen, described the security landscape as “alarming.”
This deterioration followed government’s dissolution of opposition forces in Panyume Payam, resulting to the displacement of over 7,000 people and has since led to persistent road ambushes by unknown assailants.
