Police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of Council of States member Luka Mathen, who was shot dead on Tuesday night at his residence in Juba’s Gudele neighborhood.
According to security sources, unidentified gunmen stormed Mathen’s home and shot him inside his own compound, killing him on the spot.
The attackers fled the scene immediately after the attack. Mathen represented Cueibet County in South Sudan’s Council of States.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspects or the motive behind the killing, saying investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and whether additional suspects may be involved.
Following the incident, security forces increased presence in Gudele as detectives continued to gather evidence. Police have called on the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators.
The arrest comes amid growing public concern over security in the capital, with lawmakers and citizens urging authorities to conduct a swift and transparent investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
