UK Ambassador David Ashley has called on South Sudan’s parliament to spearhead inclusive dialogue before elections.
The envoy’s remarks came after meeting Rt. Hon. Joseph Ngere Paciko in Juba, where he congratulated him on his appointment and expressed hope for a more stable and democratic future.
The discussions between the two leaders focused on the urgent need for inclusive dialogue among South Sudan’s political actors, aimed at fostering lasting peace and creating conditions necessary for credible and peaceful elections.
“Inclusive dialogue is essential to achieve peace in South Sudan and create conditions for elections, alongside timely budget approval with increased funding for essential services,” a diplomatic source said.
Ambassador Ashley emphasized that broad-based engagement bringing together government, opposition groups, and civil society would be key to reducing tensions and building public confidence in the electoral process.
The meeting also highlighted concerns over delays in the approval of the national budget, with the UK envoy stressing the importance of timely passage and increased allocation to essential public services such as healthcare, education, and humanitarian support.
Paciko’s appointment follows a sudden leadership shake-up within the assembly. He replaced former Speaker Jemma Nunu Kumba, who was impeached by her party caucus members in Juba.
Mr Paciko was sworn in last week, pledging to work towards the full implementation of the peace agreement, which he described as the only viable pathway to credible, free, and fair elections in South Sudan.
Many say the leadership transition comes at a critical time, as the country faces mounting pressure to prepare for elections amid economic challenges and lingering political tensions.
South Sudan has yet to hold its first elections since independence, and international partners have repeatedly called for reforms, dialogue, and adequate preparations to ensure the process is credible and inclusive.
The UK, a key diplomatic partner, continues to support peacebuilding efforts in the country, urging leaders to prioritize unity and institutional readiness as the election period approaches.
