Residents of Wau are increasingly struggling to cope with the rising cost of living as prices of basic commodities continue to surge in local markets, raising fresh concerns about the country’s fragile economic situation.
Interviews conducted by Standard Zone News reveal that households are finding it difficult to meet daily needs, with many saying their incomes can no longer sustain food, transport, and other essential expenses.
The pressure is intensifying as the Christmas season approaches, a period traditionally marked by higher consumer spending.
Leticia Jacob, a resident of Wau, said the persistent rise in prices has placed a heavy burden on families, particularly low-income earners.
She noted that wages and casual earnings remain stagnant while the cost of food items continues to climb, leaving many households with limited options.
Leticia appealed to traders to consider the economic realities faced by ordinary citizens and reduce prices where possible.
Returnees are among the most affected groups. Youssef Ramadan, who recently returned from Sudan, described the living conditions as extremely challenging, especially for those without stable employment.
He said the high cost of basic commodities has compounded the difficulties faced by returnees attempting to reintegrate and support their families.
Vulnerable populations are also bearing the brunt of the crisis. Atima Limba, an elderly woman living alone, said the prices of food and other necessities have become overwhelming.
With no caretaker or steady source of income, she explained that survival has become increasingly difficult as market prices continue to rise.
Adam Yahya, another resident, said essential goods are now beyond the reach of the average citizen.
He urged traders and suppliers to show consideration by keeping prices affordable, arguing that easing the cost burden would contribute to social stability and community well-being.
Local residents are calling on state authorities and market regulators to intervene by monitoring prices and strengthening oversight of trade practices.
They say urgent measures are needed to cushion consumers from the escalating cost of living, particularly during the festive period, as economic pressures continue to weigh heavily on households in Wau.
