
The Director General of the Ministry of Health in Jonglei State, Dr. Reath Koang, narrowly survived an armed attack on Thursday morning after unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle in Muggiri, along the road to Bor, the state capital.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attack occurred at around 7:30 a.m., when unidentified assailants ambushed Dr. Koang’s convoy, unleashing heavy gunfire.
“By God’s grace, Dr. Reath Koang escaped safely despite his vehicle sustaining multiple bullet damages,” a source close to the official told Standard Zone News.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and local authorities have not yet released details regarding possible suspects or arrests.
Security sources say investigations are underway, and additional forces have been deployed along the Bor–Muggiri route to ensure the safety of travelers and prevent further ambushes.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about insecurity on major roads in Jonglei State, where government officials and civilians have faced recurring ambushes by armed groups in recent months.
