Digitel, SSAF ink 10-Year deal to drive South Sudan athletics forward

Digitel Telecommunications and the South Sudan Athletics Federation (SSAF) have signed a landmark 10-year partnership aimed at driving the growth of athletics and empowering young athletes across the country.

The agreement was formalized during a ceremony in Juba attended by Digitel executives, SSAF officials, athletes, and media representatives.

SSAF Secretary-General Adv. Marco AkoL hailed the deal as a strategic alliance grounded in shared commitment to developing sports.

He said Digitel’s long-term support comes at a critical moment as the federation works to strengthen athlete development structures, expand national competitions, and elevate South Sudan’s presence on the global athletics stage.

Digitel Chief Commercial Officer Mr. Abdul stressed that the partnership goes beyond sponsorship, describing it as an investment in the nation’s future.

He said Digitel was encouraged by the success of the 2024 Independence Marathon and is dedicated to sustaining and enhancing similar initiatives.

According to him, the company aims to nurture homegrown champions capable of competing and winning on international platforms.

Digitel EVP De Chan Awoul reaffirmed the company’s commitment to community development and national unity through sports.

He unveiled plans to transform the Digitel Independence Marathon into a world-class annual event open to all South Sudanese, expatriates, and regional athletes from countries such as Uganda and Kenya.

He added that participation from all 64 tribes would make the marathon a symbol of peace, inclusion, and national pride.

Digitel emphasized its nationwide approach, affirming support for athletes from all 10 states and the three administrative areas.

The company also revealed plans to adopt digital platforms for athlete registration, communication, and event management.

Digitel clarified that the previously displayed 120 million SSP represented historical spending on athletics.

Under the new agreement, the company will commit $10,000 annually for 10 years, alongside additional support for marathon organization, athlete training, and infrastructure upgrades at Buluk Stadium.

SSAF announced plans to invite regional athletes to future marathons and expand its kids’ athletics program in towns such as Wau, Torit, and Aweil.

According to Marco, South Sudan possesses exceptional natural talent across sprinting, field events, and long-distance running, and the partnership with Digitel will play a pivotal role in unlocking that potential.

The signing ceremony concluded with a group photo session, marking the beginning of a decade-long collaboration expected to accelerate athletic development and strengthen national unity through sport.
