South Sudan, diplomats, partners honor Nicholas Haysom in Juba

South Sudanese officials, international diplomats, and partners gathered today at the United Nations House in Juba to pay tribute to the late Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), who passed away in New York on 17 March 2026.

The solemn memorial service brought together senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, high-ranking United Nations representatives, and officials from other international organizations, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Mr. Haysom’s enduring contributions to peace, diplomacy, and international cooperation.

Representing President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Vice President for the Economic Cluster, Dr. James Wani Igga, addressed the gathering, describing Mr. Haysom as “an icon of peace and stability” and emphasizing that his passing is a profound loss for both South Sudan and the global community.

“His unwavering commitment to peace, dialogue, and justice leaves a legacy that will continue to guide us for generations,” Vice President Igga said.

Accompanying the Vice President was the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Monday Semaya K. Kumba, who joined the ceremony alongside other senior officials.

From the United Nations, Mr. Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, and Ms. Anita Kiki Gbeho, UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, also paid tribute, highlighting Mr. Haysom’s pivotal role in advancing peace and stability in South Sudan.

Ms. Rebecca Haysom, daughter of the late envoy, joined the memorial via video conference.

She spoke of the personal loss felt by the family, describing her father’s absence as “immeasurable,” while noting that his principles, dedication, and vision for peace continue to inspire those working in diplomacy and conflict resolution.

Throughout his tenure, Nicholas Haysom was widely recognized for his unwavering dedication to conflict resolution, justice, and humanitarian cooperation.

His leadership in South Sudan played a critical role in supporting peace agreements, facilitating dialogue between communities and political actors, and strengthening international partnerships.

The memorial service concluded with a moment of silence in honor of Mr. Haysom’s life and legacy, underscoring the enduring impact of his work in South Sudan and the broader international community.

Nicholas Haysom will be remembered not only as a distinguished diplomat but as a tireless advocate for justice, peace, and human dignity, leaving behind a legacy that continues to guide efforts toward lasting stability in South Sudan.
