The tragic aftermath of an attack in Abiemnum County within the Ruweng Administrative Area (RAA), continuous to unfold, as the death toll has risen to 36, up from an initial count of 29.
The violent incident occurred on Wednesday when youth from neighboring Mayom County in Unity State targeted the community in Abiemnom County.
The assault not only resulted in significant loss of life but also displaced thousands, according to Hon. Chol Malith, RAA Information Minister.
James Lily Kuol, the Commissioner of Mayom County, confirm youth from his county involved in the attack, explaining that it was driven by a potential desire for revenge.
While condemning the violence, Kuol highlighted that government forces had been deployed to restore order and prevent further escalation.
Tiob de Monyluak, the Chief Administrator of the Ruweng Administrative Area, addressed journalists in Panrieng, confirming the updated casualty figures and expressing profound dismay over the incident.
“Thirty-six people have been killed, and the number of wounded currently stands at 43, all suffering from varying gunshot wounds,” Monyluak reported.
He further elaborated that many of the injured individuals have been transported to hospitals in the neighboring state of Warrap, where they remain under critical care.
The Chief Administrator conveyed his deep concern for those injured and emphasized that their recovery process will be challenging.
Both the governments of Unity State and the Ruweng Administrative Area have strongly condemned the attack, vowing to work collaboratively to ensure such acts of violence are eradicated.
Monyluak stated, “The government of Unity State condemns this action just as strongly as we do. We denounce this atrocity as inhuman and unacceptable.”
Additionally, the Chief Administrator expressed gratitude to the government of Warrap State for their efforts in hosting and providing relief to the displaced individuals fleeing Abiemnom County.
The displaced persons are reportedly receiving assistance in Warrap, as authorities work to mitigate the consequences of this devastating attack.
This incident has sparked renewed calls for heightened coordination between administrative areas and strengthened measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The focus remains on peacebuilding and providing aid to affected communities, as leaders strive to bring stability to the region.
