More than 20 passengers are reportedly missing after separate attacks along the Lui-Juba road in Western Equatoria State, with three vehicles burned, according to a local official.
Acting Mundri East County Commissioner Benson George said the first incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. at Marile, where people returning to Lanyi after harvesting honey were attacked.
One person was shot in the leg during the attack and is receiving treatment at Lanyi Primary Health Care Center, George said.
A second attack occurred at about 1:00 a.m. between Lanyi and Lui, in the same area, he said.
According to George, vehicles carrying people returning from a funeral in Maridi were attacked by unknown gunmen.
The passengers were reportedly taken to an unknown location, while three vehicles were burned during the incident.
“More than 20 people were abducted,” George said, adding that their whereabouts remained unknown.
Security forces responded to the attacks on Sunday morning but did not find the suspected attackers or the missing passengers, according to the acting commissioner.
The identities of the gunmen and their motive remain unclear.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any of the missing passengers have been found or whether arrests have been made.
