President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appealed for calm among residents of Central Equatoria State, urging communities to exercise patience as the government works through ongoing border issues with neighbouring Uganda through dialogue.
The appeal came on Wednesday after President Kiir received the resolutions of the recent South Sudan-Uganda cross-border meeting from Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony at the State House in Juba.
According to the presidency, the governor briefed the president on discussions held between officials from both countries aimed at addressing concerns along the shared border, particularly in areas where communities have expressed growing anxiety over territorial claims and cross-border activities.
President Kiir urged residents not to take matters into their own hands, assuring them that the government remains committed to resolving the dispute peacefully through diplomatic engagement with Uganda.
He emphasized that maintaining peace and stability along the border is a national priority and called on local communities to cooperate with government authorities while negotiations continue.
Governor Adil said the cross-border meeting produced a set of resolutions intended to ease tensions and strengthen cooperation between South Sudanese and Ugandan authorities.
He expressed optimism that continued dialogue would help resolve outstanding issues and preserve the longstanding relationship between the two neighbouring countries.
The governor reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to implementing the agreed resolutions in coordination with the national government and relevant institutions.
South Sudan and Uganda share a long and largely porous border that supports trade, movement of people, and cultural ties.
However, sections of the frontier have periodically been the subject of competing claims, prompting bilateral meetings aimed at preventing disputes from escalating.
The latest engagement reflects ongoing efforts by both governments to address border concerns through peaceful dialogue and cooperation while safeguarding the interests of communities living along the frontier.
