A dispute over the representation of comedians in South Sudan has turned physical, with comedian and content creator Mr Yai and South Sudan Artists’ Union official Luckey O’ner reportedly arrested after a confrontation at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in Juba.
The two were among rival sides summoned to the ministry to discuss a possible resolution to the dispute, according to comedian Rocka Ringo.
The disagreement began last month after Mr Yai and a group led by content creator Mr Dotcom registered an organisation known as the South Sudanese Comedian Union.
The registration was opposed by the South Sudan Artists’ Union, led by Luckey O’ner, and other artists and comedians who argued that comedians are already represented under the Artists’ Union.
The dispute escalated during the meeting at the Justice Ministry, where a physical altercation reportedly broke out.
Information reaching Standard Zone News indicates that Mr Yai, Luckey O’ner and another content creator are being detained in Juba following the incident.
Details of the confrontation, including what triggered the alleged fight, remain unclear.
Neither side had publicly provided a detailed account of the incident by the time of publication.
The latest development has added a new twist to an increasingly public disagreement over whether comedians should operate under a separate union or remain represented through the existing South Sudan Artists’ Union.
