More than 5,000 people have crossed into South Sudan from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) amid concerns over an Ebola outbreak, the United Nations said.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the arrivals entered Ibba County in Western Equatoria State between July and mid-October.
Nearly 380 are Congolese nationals, while the rest are South Sudanese returning from the DRC.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said many arrivals urgently need food, medicine, shelter materials and other essential supplies.
The agencies also called for an Ebola isolation centre at the Nabanga border crossing to strengthen screening and disease surveillance.
South Sudanese health authorities and UN partners have conducted preparedness exercises in Juba, Yei and Yambio to test the country’s ability to detect and respond to suspected Ebola cases.
