The South Sudanese comedian has withdrawn his resignation as Interim President of the South Sudan Comedians’ Union after his fellow comedians refused to let him walk away.
According Mr. Yai said he listened to the pleas of his colleagues and agreed to remain in the caretaker position until the union holds its first general election.
His decision came after comedians reportedly pushed back against his earlier attempt to step down, insisting that he stay in charge and guide the union through the electoral process.
Mr. Yai now has one more job to add to his comedy career: organising an election.
The union’s first general election is expected in December, meaning Mr. Yai has roughly three months to prepare comedians for the big political show this time with ballots instead of punchlines.
For now, his resignation appears to have become the one joke his colleagues refused to laugh at.
Mr. Yai is expected to remain interim leader until the election is held and a new leadership team is chosen.
