
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has expressed condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.
In a condolence message dated September 7, 2026, President Kiir said he received the news of Hafidh Ameir’s passing with deep sorrow, extending his sympathies to President Samia, her family and loved ones.
“On behalf of my family, the Government and the people of the Republic of South Sudan, I convey my deepest condolences to President Suluhu, her family, and the people of the United Republic of Tanzania,” Kiir said.
Hafidh Ameir Hassan, Tanzania’s First Gentleman, reportedly died on Monday morning while receiving treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar. He was reportedly in his 70s.
Tanzanian authorities have confirmed his death, with preparations for the funeral reportedly underway.
President Kiir said the people of South Sudan stand in solidarity with the people of Tanzania during the period of mourning.
He also prayed for strength and comfort for President Samia, her family and the Tanzanian people as they cope with the loss.
The death comes as Tanzania prepares for the funeral, with authorities expected to provide further details on burial arrangements.
