Juba court jails man for two years over fake legal practice

Juba County Court has sentenced James Makwach Ker to two years in prison for practising law without the required legal qualifications.

Makwach was convicted under Section 342 of the Penal Code Act, 2008, on impersonation charges.

The court also ordered him to surrender his practising licence to the South Sudan Bar Association and immediately close his office.

The sentence takes effect from September 26, 2026.

The case followed a complaint by the South Sudan Bar Association, which said a review found that Makwach did not possess the necessary qualifications to practise law.

He was reportedly arrested while handling a case at a local court in Hai Referendum, Juba.

The conviction underscores the legal requirements governing the practice of law in South Sudan and the role of the Bar Association in addressing cases involving individuals accused of practising without the required qualifications.
