South Sudan accuses Sudanese army of attacking Amiet market as death toll reaches 73

South Sudan has condemned a drone attack on Amiet Market in the Abyei Area, accusing the Sudanese Armed Forces of carrying out the strike as reports put the confirmed death toll at 73.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said the attack targeted multiple locations within Amiet Market, situated north of Abyei Town, resulting in civilian casualties, injuries and significant destruction of property.

The government described the incident as a serious threat to civilian safety and stability in the Abyei Area.

“The Government of the Republic of South Sudan condemns in the strongest terms possible the attack on Amiet Market,” the statement said.

The government extended its condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Following the attack, South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Sudanese ambassador to convey Juba’s strong protest and deep concern over the incident.

According to the statement, the government raised concerns about the implications of the attack for the protection of civilians and the wider security situation in the Abyei Area.

Juba called on Sudan to refrain from actions that endanger civilian lives and property, urging the neighbouring country to protect civilians.

The reported death toll of 73 underscores the severity of the attack on the busy market.

However, the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s statement did not specify the number of people killed or injured.

The Abyei Area remains a disputed territory between Sudan and South Sudan, with its final status unresolved.
