Police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have arrested a suspected drug dealer during a security operation targeting the illegal sale and distribution of narcotics in Aweil Town.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in the Maper Akot and Sakis residential areas, where authorities said they have received growing concerns over drug trafficking and substance abuse.
Speaking to reporters in Aweil, the State Police Commissioner, Maj. Gen. Gabriel Guet Padiet, confirmed the arrest of a suspect accused of selling illegal drugs, including Tramadol and Shisha.
Northern Bahr el Ghazal Police Spokesperson, Col. Madut Ngong Aleu, said officers recovered 14 cartons containing Tramadol and Shisha during the operation.
“The Criminal Investigation Department recovered 14 cartons of Tramadol and Shisha during the operation. The suspect believed to be supplying these drugs within the town has been arrested and is currently in CID custody pending further investigation,” Col. Madut said.
He said investigators are gathering evidence before presenting the suspect to court, where formal charges are expected to be filed in accordance with the law.
Col. Madut warned those involved in the illegal drug trade to abandon the practice, saying law enforcement agencies would continue pursuing individuals engaged in drug-related crimes.
“The Criminal Investigation Department will continue carrying out operations to eliminate drug-related crimes and protect the people of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State,” he said.
Police say the latest operation forms part of broader efforts to curb the circulation of illegal drugs, improve public safety and address the growing impact of substance abuse in communities across Aweil Town.
